Alongside the female supermodels, the fashion industry also has well-known male models who have earned top-model status. The industry is the same, but the rules of the game are slightly different. The road to success is somewhat harder for young men than for young women, but in this article you will find out how to follow it with purpose.

Male Models: Requirements and Advice

Requirements for Male Models

Young men face a strict and fairly narrow height requirement: they should be no shorter than 185 cm and no taller than 190 cm. This applies in all markets, for professional work in both photoshoots and designer shows. That said, although it is rare, there are always exceptions: if a model's face has a lot of potential or the model is truly unique, an agency may give him a chance.

If a young man comes to an agency for the first time at an early age and is told he is too short to start a career, there is a good chance he will still grow and reach the required height, so do not give up and try again later. Sometimes a mother agency cannot offer a contract yet because a boy is too short, but asks him to come back in a few years – so remember that, and never give up!

Young men also need to look after their appearance – their physique, skin and hair... Agencies want male models to have a "fit" build, so find a sport you enjoy that helps you keep your body toned.

Tips for New Male Models

To become a successful model, it is important not to lose motivation. Jobs and recognition rarely come without long and consistent work.

Young men often need to invest in model test shoots. In them, just like girls, they have to open up as models and pose naturally, know their best angles and be able to improvise with their body. This takes a lot of practice, and many young men find it hard to show this in their first test shoots.

So practise often in front of a mirror or your phone camera, watch how professional male models do it and draw inspiration from them. Young men also need to keep updating their model book because, as they grow and mature, the structure of their face and their build change noticeably.

It is also very important for young men to practise their walk. After all, every fashion week brings men's fashion weeks in the fashion capitals too – Milan, London, New York... Look for examples of men's runway walking on YouTube; your mother agency will also give you advice.

That is why it is important to choose a reliable, experienced mother agency. The model agents working there can predict in which markets you are likely to do better or worse, give you useful advice and point you in the right direction. Start by looking at the agencies operating in Lithuania. Check whether they are reliable, how much experience they have in representing male models, and look through their social media. Ask friends who already work as models what they think of the agencies, or simply message young men signed to an agency and ask for advice. To make your search easier, we have compiled lists of model agencies in Vilnius and Kaunas.

Put effort into presenting and representing yourself as a model on social media. If you are already signed to a model agency, mention it and simply run your model book on Instagram. That way international agencies and clients can notice you too, which will help you build your modelling career. A great example is Supermodels agency model Karolis Inokaitis. He presents himself and his personality brilliantly and creates interesting, aesthetic, fashion-related content, attracting hundreds of thousands of followers.

Take an interest in the fashion industry. As a model, it is important to look stylish and know the current fashion trends. We also recommend being familiar with at least the main names of famous designers and brands.
