For several years now, the global modelling industry has been changing, bringing a positive attitude towards plus-size models. Today it is a fast-growing sector of the fashion world. Now that natural beauty and a healthy lifestyle are being promoted, there is greater demand for, support for and recognition of curvy models.

Who can become a plus-size model?

Although the usual model standards are being broken, not just anyone can become a plus-size model either. A model must be at least 170 cm tall. There are no precisely defined bust, waist and hip measurements, but there is one important figure criterion – the waist must be at least 25–30 cm smaller than the hips.

In Asian countries, girls from 170 cm tall with measurements of around 115 cm at the hips, 78 cm at the waist and 110 cm at the bust can work as plus-size models. Of course, the measurements can vary by about 5 cm either way, often depending on height.
In Europe and America, plus-size models are taller, from 172 cm to 180 cm. Models wear European clothing sizes from 38 to 48.

The most important quality for a plus-size model is self-confidence. Such a model is easy to communicate and work with for both agencies and clients. A good model is not ashamed of her body and her curves, radiates positivity and believes in herself, giving 100% to the job.

Sport and healthy eating should not be foreign to a plus-size model either. A model must be an example not only of beauty but also of a healthy lifestyle – not exhausting her body with diets, but not overindulging in unhealthy fast food either. A model must also look after her skin, teeth and hair, which reflect a healthy lifestyle.

What work do plus-size models do?

In Lithuania, the market for plus-size models is still small and there is not enough work, so these models mostly get direct jobs abroad, all around the world. These jobs can include catalogue shoots, magazine editorials, commercials or campaigns for major brands.

Well-known brands such as "H&M", "Nike" and "Victoria's Secret" have recently been including models with distinctive looks and different body shapes in their advertising campaigns, building a healthier and more accessible connection with an audience of all shapes, ages and appearances.

Many designers abroad also now invite plus-size models to show their collections during fashion weeks. At the spring 2020 collection show of the renowned designer Simon Porte Jacquemus, you could see models with every kind of beauty.
